Calor's Energy Saving Tips For Poultry Farmers

As the UK’s leading supplier of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), Calor’s long standing relationship with the farming community has been built over 70 years.

Calor LPG is the healthiest and most reliable fuel for both game and poultry birds. It mixes easily with air in a purpose designed and properly maintained burner, so it burns more efficiently and cleanly and provides less carbon emissions than oil. LPG also has an enviable environmental and safety track record.

In addition, there is little danger of contaminated feeds or litter as fuel is not wasted through incomplete combustion. Instead, LPG produces the moist heat that promotes rapid and even feathering, increasing weight gain.

A reliable power supply is essential to all businesses, but for poultry farmers it can be a matter of life and death. With Calor, consistent levels of heat result in sheds that are heated to the optimum temperature which has a positive impact on feeding, sleeping and feathering.

In addition, Calor’s reliable service, coupled with its unrivalled distribution network reaching even the remotest areas of the UK, offers complete peace of mind.

Gas meters can also be used with Calor’s LPG supply which enables the close monitoring of gas usage and allows comparisons to be made between each shed on site and also between each growth cycle. This useful data allows farmers to identify where adjustments to conditions can be made, such as adjusting the temperature of heaters, and further monitor the effects the changes have on the birds.

Farmers using LPG for poultry rearing can also use it for their homes and other buildings on site such as office space or storage facilities as Calor LPG allows the full package of heating, water heating and gas for cooking to run from a single source.

Commercial market manager, Sabrina Jackson, offers some simple tips for poultry farmers to reduce their impact on the environment and on their bottom line. She says: “There are some areas of the farm where making some simple adjustments can make a big difference on your energy use. Reducing the amount of energy used will result in less carbon dioxide emissions and will also lead to a reduction in energy bills.”

Calor suggests the following hints for conserving energy on farms:

  • Make sure you are not heating areas that do not require it such as corridors and stores and ensure you are not overheating other areas.
  • Prevent heat loss by improving insulation and draught control which in the long term could prove more cost effective and repair any holes or damaged sheds.
  • Check your heating thermometer. Heating costs can rise by up to eight per cent for every 1oC of overheating.
  • Use energy efficient light bulbs throughout your building. They last up to twelve times longer than conventional light bulbs and use a fraction of the energy. And remember to turn of lights when they are not needed and make sure lights are turned off in stores, toilets, etc.
  • Carry out regular service and maintenance checks on all equipment to ensure fuel is being used efficiently.
  • Finally, make sure employees are aware of your plans to save energy. Together, as a team, you will save more energy and you can start saving immediately.
