LPG Generators Could Save Thousands And Keep Businesses Trading

Rural restaurateurs, hoteliers and publicans could save thousands of pounds in the event of a power failure by simply installing an LPG-powered generator to provide emergency energy to power their heating, lighting and catering needs.

Many catering and hospitality businesses in off-mains gas areas already use LPG to power their heating, water heating and catering equipment. However in the event of an electricity power cut, there could be disastrous consequences for their business, particularly if they serve hot meals.

That’s the message from Calor, the UK’s leading supplier of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), which is currently undertaking a campaign to educate LPG customers in rural areas about the benefits of installing a back-up LPG generator or converting an existing petrol generator to LPG.

Anyone living in the country will tell you that power cuts are an unfortunate by-product of rural life during the winter months. When the power goes down, not only do you lose heating and hot water, but now, revisions to the Gas Regulations in 2001 mean that the ventilation interlock system in kitchens will automatically shut the gas supply off completely.

For businesses running catering equipment on natural gas or LPG, the result is a complete cessation of power rendering the business unable to provide services such as hot meals.

Alan Seggie, Calor commercial specialist, believes that the revisions, although costly during a power cut, have absolutely been introduced for the right reasons: “The new regulations quite rightly specify that every new kitchen installation needs to include a ventilation interlock system. An interlock is required to ensure the safety and comfort of the kitchen staff. If the ventilation system is not operating correctly, gases including carbon monoxide and nitrogen dioxide can build up to dangerous levels.“

For LPG customers, Calor is suggesting that a simple solution and one which is more cost-effective than petrol, would be the installation of an LPG generator, which would allow a business to continue operating until normal electricity services are resumed.

Alan said: “An LPG generator would provide the back up system to allow the ventilation interlock system to continue to operate.”

Calor believes that by installing an LPG-powered generator the hotelier or restaurateur can provide the same high level of service guests are used to with minimum disruption. Alan said: “A Calor LPG-powered generator can be connected to run off a LPG cylinder or an existing LPG bulk tank. A change over switch is installed to the electricity supply, which in the event of power failure will engage the generator to supply energy. This vital source of energy can potentially save the business thousands of pounds, kicking in to run the boiler to maintain heating and hot water, the cooker and kitchen ventilation to give guests hot meals and drinks right down to powering the freezer to maintain valuable stored food.”

For Adrian Hyde, Co-Director of Overwater Hall, an elegant grade II listed hotel set in 18 acres of garden and woodland in Ireby, Cumbria, an LPG generator is providing complete peace of mind. Used to at least three or four power cuts every year, Overwater Hall initially had a petrol generator, but has now converted this to LPG, as the hotel already uses Calor LPG for its catering and heating requirements.

Adrian said: “One of the great attractions of Overwater Hall is our rural location. Flanked by dramatic Skiddaw and its surrounding fells, we are a country house hotel in the true sense of the word. However, as any business operating in rural Cumbria will tell you, we are also susceptible to power cuts.

“A generator brings many benefits, not least the ability to provide our guests with hot water and heating when there’s a power cut. Changing to an LPG generator will bring even greater benefits as we won’t need to worry about running out of gas as we already have a 4,000-litre bulk tank in place to provide Calor LPG for our catering and heating.”

An established fuel with cleaner emissions, Calor LPG is a cost-effective, cleaner burning option to other off mains fuel sources and can be up to fifty per cent cheaper than a petrol generator.

LPG generators also have a greater flexibility due to extended running time, lower maintenance costs with prolonged life for spark plugs and engine oil.

Suitable for all types of rural catering and hospitality businesses, LPG generators are quieter and there is no noticeable reduction in performance.
