With more heating options available than ever before and energy efficiency being on most homeowners’ minds, in addition to fitting products installers are increasingly being relied on to provide in-depth advice. LPG supplier Calor is therefore urging installers to learn more about the costs, benefits and carbon emission ratings of different non-mains-gas fuels, especially if they’re based near rural areas.
Via the media, homeowners are receiving continual messages about how important it is to reduce carbon emissions. On top of this, Home Information Pack assessments are encouraging them to seriously consider energy efficiency. This has led some people to reconsider their heating systems – whether or not they need replacing – and therefore the role of the heating engineer has changed.
As well as installing products, heating engineers are increasingly being asked for advice on which heating systems and fuels offer the best running costs, benefits and efficiencies, and for guidance on how to save energy. This means that as well as being knowledgeable about high efficiency products, installers also need to be able to provide information about renewable technologies and insulation, and, according to Calor, if they are based near a rural area, understanding the differences between the non-mains-gas fuels available is essential.
Andrew Davies, contracts manager at Blazes Fireplace & Heating Centre in Worcester, said: “Over the past couple of years we’ve noticed a distinct difference in the type of information homeowners are looking for. Rather than just asking us to fit a boiler, a lot of homeowners ask about cutting fuel costs and how to reduce their impact on the environment. We’re receiving lots of enquiries about solar panels too. There are lots of rural communities nearby, so homeowners are always asking us for advice on whether they should choose oil or LPG. Homeowners used to ask us which fuel was the cheapest, but increasingly their decision is based on environmental factors.”
Offering a real and controllable flame for cookers and fires, underground storage, automatic fuel top-ups, convenience, hassle-free tank maintenance and online account monitoring, Calor LPG is becoming the ideal choice for many people living in non-mains-gas areas.
Unlike oil, the storage of LPG does not pose any pollution hazards, and figures from the latest SAP, published by the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister in 2005, show that heating oil generates 13.2 per cent more greenhouse gas emissions than LPG. In addition, LPG is compatible with many of the solar thermal water heating packages on the market, which can provide most of a home’s hot water during the summer months*.
Understanding how important energy efficiency is, Calor has teamed up with heating appliance manufacturer Worcester to offer up to £400 off a LPG solar thermal water heating system. The company is also offering homeowners discounted cavity wall and loft insulation in conjunction with energy supplier npower.
Calor is committed to communicating the benefits of LPG and stimulating demand and growth in the market. The company fully supports proactive installers with cash bonus offers and an approved installer scheme – where Calor refers enquiries for LPG domestic central heating installations to local Calor approved installers.
