Farming Fuel for Thought

Calor, the UK’s leading supplier of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), has seen a dramatic increase in demand in recent weeks as prices for alternative fuels, such as oil and diesel, rise considerably and incidences of fuel theft become more frequent.

Used in the agriculture industry for a variety of applications including heating poultry sheds, glasshouses and polytunnels, fuelling weedburners, providing a heat source for grain drying and storage facilities, as well as space heating for farm buildings and domestic properties. LPG also has environmental benefits over other fuel types.

Laura Luty, Calor’s Bulk Market Manager explains the benefits: “Not only is Calor LPG cheaper to run on both a price per litre and per kWh basis than oil, it is also a cleaner burning fuel than alternative fuels making it the sound environmental choice too.

“Recent press reports have also covered instances of fuel theft which can potentially be avoided by choosing Calor LPG. As LPG is not stored in large quantities, and cannot be siphoned off from the tank, the risk of pilfering and fuel spillages is greatly reduced.

“In addition, unlike oil tanks, LPG bulk tanks remain the responsibility of the LPG supplier and Calor’s bulk storage tanks are subject to regular inspections and maintenance backed up by a 24 hour emergency service.”

Farmers should also be aware that if they were to have an oil spill, they would be responsible for the clean-up of the oil and, as some oil may penetrate into the ground, they will remain responsible for any contamination discovered many years down the line, even after they have moved premises.

Laura concludes: “Calor LPG is also compatible with many renewable fuel solutions, such as solar water heating, which can reduce fuel costs and carbon dioxide emissions further. The case for Calor LPG has never been stronger.”
