With recent news headlines stating
that the UK is about to experience one of its coldest winters
in years and that energy costs are on the increase, the
temptation to dust down and fire up old heating appliances
is hard to resist. But says Calor, which is launching its
annual Heater Health Check campaign this week, think safety
first.
According to Calor, over one million homeowners turn
up the heat in their homes with a portable heater every
winter. As a highly effective and economical source of
instant heat, the heaters get a lot of intense usage
during the winter months, and it is for this reason that
they should be given an annual check to keep them in
tip top condition.
Calor is urging portable heater owners to book their
heater in for a Heater Health Check. The checks,
which are completely free of charge, are being carried
out at Calor Gas Direct centres right across the UK and
include a thorough inspection of the heater for the following:
- Wear
and tear
- Current approved design
- Controls
- Fireguards
- Pilot
- Back plate
- Kick plate
- Ceramic panels
- Stability of castors
Andrea Price, consumer market
manager at Calor comments: “Much
the same as any other piece of equipment, portable
heaters need an annual once-over to check they
are in prime working condition. How many people
would carry on running a car year upon year without
a regular MOT? “We are asking everyone with a portable heater,
and those who have dependants who own heaters, to book
in for a Heater Health Check. The free check is quick
and it will ensure that the heater performs safely and
at its best during the forthcoming cold snaps that are
forecast for the UK.”
Caring for others
On caring for others during
the winter months, Andrea comments: “It may not
just be ourselves who we need to worry about during the
colder months. Many of us have dependants who rely on
us to help them to prepare for the winter ahead:
The Elderly
“The elderly are at greater risk during
winter as the cost of heating becomes an issue and
the cold weather effects health.
“Many elderly people spend time in just one room
of the house, so heating the whole home throughout the
day is an unnecessary expenditure. This is when portable
heaters come into their own - they heat only the room*
being used, meaning that temperatures and costs can be
easily measured.”
Students
Andrea continues: “As
children grow older and plan to leave the family
nest, many decide to move into college or university
digs where there is often a lack of home comforts such
as double glazing, good insulation and regular, controllable
heating.
“A lot of students would rather spend their last
pound in the student union than topping up the heating
meter! Sending your child to university with a portable
heater is a sensible solution.
“Replacement cylinders can be bought online at
www.calorheatershop.co.uk and delivered direct, so no
matter how far away you are from a dependent, heat need
never be a concern.”
Andrea concludes: “If you, your elderly relatives
or your children own a portable heater, take advantage
of Calor’s free Heater Health Check now. A quick
inspection at a local Calor Gas Direct centre will provide
long term peace of mind and a much warmer winter.”
