Calor Introduces New Build Technical Factfile

Calor, the UK’s leading LPG supplier, has introduced a technical fact file designed for rural new build housing developers, architects and specifiers, which contains essential information on LPG and clearly demonstrates the benefits of the non-mains-gas fuel.

The technical fact file includes an overview of Calor and LPG - including its benefits over other alternative fuels such as oil – technical information, tank options, an installation guide, information on cylinders, an overview of appliances available such as cookers, fires, patio heaters and barbecues and case studies from new build developers that have chosen LPG.

Rachel Hodge , market development manager of Calor , said: “Calor is committed to communicating LPG’s benefits and stimulating demand and growth in the market. Our new technical fact file, designed specifically for rural housing developers, architects and specifiers, will help to communicate LPG’s benefits to this audience.

“ Rural developers are becoming more clued up about LPG. They are finding that installing the fuel makes properties easier to sell because home buyers prefer gas - especially if they are moving from an urban area where they have been used to the benefits of mains gas. This is why, for example, specialist housing developer Richmond Homes recently chose Calor to fuel an estate of eleven luxury homes.

“LPG is the closest alternative to mains gas; it is the only non-mains-gas fuel which provides a real and controllable flame for cookers and fires. Even the sight of the LPG storage tank can be eliminated by opting for an unobtrusive underground tank. All that is visible with this type of installation is a compact round green cover, which gives access to the valve assembly.

“Another important benefit Calor offers is a constant supply of fuel. The Think Tank ® storage system, available on above or below ground tank options, enables customers to be automatically topped-up with Calor LPG when required, without any action on the homeowners’ part - ensuring they will always have gas. With The Think Tank ® installed there really is no difference between LPG and mains gas.”

The move towards LPG has also been compounded by an increasing awareness of the new oil regulations surrounding bunding. All new tanks and those undergoing major refurbishment over 2,500 litres must now be bunded. Those under 2,500 litres must be risk assessed by an OFTEC trained and registered installer or checked by a building control officer or someone who holds a building control license.

Where the environment is concerned, LPG presents a strong case against oil. There are over 5,000 oil spillage incidents every year, which are not just confined to commercial premises. When an oil spillage does occur, if the council declares the ground contaminated under the Environmental Protection Act, the person responsible for the pollution – which could be the person who installed the tank – could pay up to £20,000 in fines, along with any associated clear up costs.

Rachel Hodge said: “With Calor LPG, developers can rest assured that the tank installation and insurance is our responsibility, and we complete a full site survey beforehand. We will assist with the application of any planning permission that may be required, and provide detailed information and guidance on the excavation process. We are also used to working with builders with demanding schedules and are rated highly for our on-time delivery. After installation, the tank remains the property and responsibility of Calor and is checked and maintained by our qualified engineers every time gas is delivered.”
